Compstall, which was formerly known as Compstall Bridge, originated as a mill village spurred on by the industrial revoloution during the 1820s. The modern day settlement still retains most of its original mill cottages and is a popular place to live sitting on the fence between Manchester and the Peak District.
Compstall’s mills were built to utilise the natural energy of the River Etherow that flows through the village. While the mills are no longer used a country park has been developed along the river and its mill pond. This area has now become an outstanding nature reserve and provides an idylic space to walk and take in the peaceful surroundings within the heart of the community.
