Considered a hamlet, Disley dates back many centuries with the earliest records back as far as 13th Century and later became recognised as a staging post with the Inn, now known as The Rams Head. It is thought that this was a Tax collection point as well as being the all-important Coaching House in the centre of the hamlet and stopping off point along the long route to London. It was in the 13th Century that Edward I granted lands to Jordan de Dystelegh of Disley Hall and Roger de Stanley-de-Dystelegh of Stanley Hall in the district, pointing to the older name for the original hamlet.

The first of the villages where the terrain becomes the hills of the Peak District and although this is still Cheshire it is no longer part of the Cheshire Plain but enjoys some spectacular view from the higher regions towards the West and across the plain towards the Welsh Hills and the Dee Estuary. A small but important rural market and farming community but with some very important and historical links the area is now predominantly both a dormitory village and a popular tourist destination for the Historic Lyme Hall used in the filming of the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.

Living here you can enjoy the spectacular views of the countryside and take advantage of an abundance of outdoor recreational pursuits amid the beauty of the hill scenery and the river valleys, which once provided a network of mills that powered the industrial revolution.

Disley has a population of around 4,300 and is located 6 miles (9.65km) south East of Stockport and is part of Cheshire East Council and it includes the neighbouring area known as Newtown on the boarder with Derbyshire.
