Once a rural market village this popular location has seen some very interesting changes since its early records back in the 13th century when it was known as Weylegh or Weyley. If you know where to look you can still see many of the historic features, which made Whaley Bridge into a busy and bustling centre where goods and minerals were transport by early rail systems from the hills around Buxton to the canal basin for further transportation to the industrial towns around Manchester and beyond. There is still some industry left and long may it remain giving jobs and life to the area but in the main the village is now a dormitory area and has a wide and varied cross section of housing styles, sizes and caters for pretty much any of your own personal requirements whatever your budget.

This area is set at the lower end of the Goyt Valley a picturesque area with two reservoirs and surrounded by forestry and moorland. But Whaley has it’s own reservoir with it’s own sailing club and a popular angling location and originally built along with Combs Reservoir to feed the canal system. The area is also known as a starting point for exploring the peaks whether walking or on mountain bikes.

The village supports two primary schools, a superstore and a vibrant local community with a railway station on the Manchester-Buxton line.
